Special instructions

For stool testing, antibiotics generally need to be avoided for at least four weeks and proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, for two weeks before collection.
Tell your healthcare provider if you take bismuth-containing medicines, as these can also affect results.
Confirm any medication changes with your healthcare provider before stopping prescribed treatment.
If checking whether treatment worked, arrange your stool test at least four weeks after completing antibiotics.

Description

The Stomach Ulcer Test checks for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that can infect the stomach lining and cause inflammation and peptic ulcers.

Two testing options are available. The blood antibody test detects the body’s immune response to H. pylori but cannot distinguish between a past and current infection. The stool antigen test detects evidence of an active infection and can also be used after treatment to check whether the bacteria have cleared.

Your results can help your healthcare provider determine the next steps for your care. This test detects H. pylori; it does not directly diagnose a stomach ulcer.
